Dubai: Kuwaiti media outlets are reporting that Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has sustained serious leg injuries and has been moved to the Russian capital, Moscow, for emergency surgery.
The 56-year-old Mojtaba was appointed to the position following the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in an airstrike on February 28. However, several figures, including U.S. President Donald Trump, have expressed doubts, suggesting he might be in a coma or even deceased. Pro-American media reports claim that Mojtaba Khamenei is unaware of the ongoing war in the country or even the fact that he has been named the new leader.
According to a report by Al-Jarida, Mojtaba Khamenei was transported to Moscow in total secrecy via a Russian military aircraft following the personal intervention of President Vladimir Putin. The report suggests that a successful surgery was performed at Putin’s palace. There are unconfirmed reports stating that his legs were amputated and that he sustained severe injuries to his liver and abdomen.
Leadership Vacuum and Mystery
Currently, even top commanders lack clarity on the situation within the country. Although a statement was released in Khamenei’s name recently, he has not appeared before a camera. The statement mentioned that, in addition to his father, he lost his wife, brother-in-law, and son in the airstrike.
Mojtaba was reportedly injured during the U.S. military operation titled "Operation Epic Fury." Reports suggest that control of Iran is currently in the hands of regional commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The destruction of communication networks and the loss of top leaders due to continuous attacks by the U.S. and Israel have severely weakened Iran’s leadership.
Global Perspectives on the Severity of the Injury
There are conflicting opinions globally regarding the extent of Mojtaba Khamenei’s injuries:
U.S. Claim: According to U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Khamenei is seriously injured and his facial features have been significantly altered. U.S. Intelligence believes he is currently incapacitated.
Israeli Assessment: Israeli defense sources state that he sustained leg injuries. However, they believe the injuries are not critical and that he is remaining out of the public eye primarily for security reasons.
Iranian Government Position: While Iran has not officially disclosed many details, state media describes him as a "hero injured in war." Foreign ministry spokespersons claim he is safe and undergoing treatment.
Mystery Over Statements: The statement released last Thursday was not a recorded video; instead, it was read out by a news anchor. This has fueled suspicions regarding whether he is still alive.
