DUBAI: In response to escalating tensions, Britain has begun preparations to deploy its aircraft carrier, HMS Prince of Wales, to the Middle East. The notice period for the ship’s departure has been slashed from ten days to just five.
Despite these military preparations, Britain has not stated that it will join the war. The statements from Prime Minister Keir Starmer and the moves by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) reflect a highly cautious stance.
Britain has clarified that it is not a partner in the direct attacks carried out by the US and Israel against Iran. The Prime Minister maintained that the UK is not seeking "regime change from the air."
However, Britain is taking defensive measures to protect its allies (such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Bahrain) and hundreds of thousands of British citizens from Iranian missile and drone attacks. To facilitate this, the US has been granted permission to use British bases, including those in Cyprus.
Current Readiness
The HMS Prince of Wales is currently in a state of "Advanced Preparedness," meaning it can head to the Middle East on five days' notice. The Ministry emphasizes that this is not a declaration of war, but a precaution for self-defense and the potential evacuation of citizens should the situation deteriorate.
Currently, British Typhoon fighter jets are patrolling the skies over Jordan and Qatar. Their primary role is to intercept and shoot down Iranian missiles and drones mid-flight.
Rising Tensions and International Pressure
While Britain prefers to avoid direct combat, certain events are heightening their vigilance. Recently, an Iranian drone landed near a British base in Cyprus; the Ministry warns that if such attacks continue, Britain will be forced to retaliate.
US President Donald Trump has reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with Britain’s "neutral" stance and may demand more active support from the ally. While Britain currently acts as a "defensive shield," they may be drawn into the conflict if Iranian attacks intensify or British lives are put at risk.
Key Developments
US Demands: The United States has demanded that Iran "surrender unconditionally." Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian dismissed this as a "mere dream."
Ongoing Attacks: Iranian attacks continue in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. In response, Israel and the US are conducting extensive airstrikes in Iran and Lebanon.
Use of Bases: The British Ministry of Defence confirmed that the US is using British military bases to intercept Iranian missile launches.
Trump's Warning: On his social media platform, Truth Social, Donald Trump wrote that Iran is a "failed state in the Middle East" and would receive a "heavy blow today."The world watches with fear as the threat of a major war looms. Following a drone attack that caused a fire at Dubai International Airport, President Trump announced that a massive retaliatory strike would be delivered to Iran today. Although the Iranian President previously stated that attacks on neighboring countries would stop, the Revolutionary Guards continued their strikes shortly after, further worsening the crisis. British warplanes continue their surveillance over Jordan, Qatar, and Cyprus.
