MOSCOW: An Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner with over 240 people on board crashed in a residential area near the western Indian city of Ahmedabad on Thursday. According to the latest reports, at least 150 people were killed.
The flight, bound for London, crashed immediately after takeoff, India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said.

Casualties, survivors
- There were 242 people on board the plane, including two pilots and ten cabin crew.
- According to preliminary reports, the crash killed all those on board, police said.
- According to the New Indian Express newspaper, at least 60 bodies have been recovered at the crash site.
- The plane crashed into a medical college hostel; 20 students have reportedly been injured.
Flight to London
- Air India confirmed the crash of its Boeing 787 aircraft that was operating Flight AI-171 to London.
- London’s Gatwick Airport said that the flight had been expected to land at 6:25 p.m. local time.
Airport’s operation
- Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport suspended operations after the plane crash.
No Russians on board
- According to preliminary reports, there were no Russians on the flight, the Russian embassy said.
Condolences
- Russian President Vladimir Putin offered his condolences to the Indian authorities over the tragedy.
- British Prime Minister Keir Starmer wrote on the X social media platform that his "thoughts are with the passengers and their families at this deeply distressing time."

- This is the first-ever crash of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
