MELITOPOL: Experts of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) who returned to the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) after the Kiev regime blocked the IAEA rotation will continue to perform their work, the plant’s spokeswoman, Yevgenia Yashina, told TASS.
On February 12, Russia’s Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova reported the disruption of the rotation.
TASS has gathered the key updates on the situation.
Rotation disruption
- A routine rotation of the IAEA Secretariat’s experts, which had previously been postponed from February 5 to February 12 because of Ukraine, was once again prevented, the Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova reported.
- According to her, the convoy of Russian troops and the IAEA Secretariat’s experts leaving the ZNPP was targeted by drones and mortars.
- Experts from the IAEA mission are safe, following a Ukrainian assault, thanks to the efforts of Russian servicemen, according to Yevgeny Balitsky, the Governor of the Zaporozhye Region.
- The agency’s experts continue to observe and assess the operational and physical safety of the Zaporozhye NPP until the rotation resumes, the plant’s spokeswoman, Yevgenia Yashina, said.
- According to her, the vehicles in which the IAEA experts were during the rotation are intact.
Reaction
- The disruption of the rotation of the IAEA experts at the ZNPP was caused solely by the actions of the Ukrainian side, while Russia met all its obligations to ensure security, the Russian Defense Ministry said.
- The disruption of Wednesday’s rotation of the IAEA experts stationed at the ZNPP was completely unacceptable due to security risks, the agency’s Director General Rafael Grossi stated.
Situation around rotation
- On February 7, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stated after a meeting with Russia’s Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation chief Alexey Likhachev that expert rotations at the ZNPP would resume in the coming days.
- Earlier, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry claimed that a routine rotation of the international organization’s observers had been postponed allegedly due to Russia’s failure to provide security guarantees.
- Russian Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Vienna Mikhail Ulyanov reiterated that Ukraine was distorting facts when it spoke about a lack of security guarantees from Russia for the IAEA expert rotation at the Zaporozhye NPP.
- He clarified that Kiev had tried to impose new requirements that went beyond established practices.
