New Delhi: President Ram Nath Kovind has signed a bill to repeal three controversial agricultural laws. With this, the so called black laws were abolished in the country. The year-long struggle by farmers across the country has paid off.
The bill to repeal the three agricultural laws was passed by a record time in both houses of parliament on the first day of the winter session on Monday. The Lok Sabha passed the bill within four minutes, rejecting the opposition's demand for a detailed discussion on the repeal of the Agrarian Laws Bill. The bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha after a short debate.
With just a few months to go before elections in states like Uttar Pradesh and Punjab, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 19 announced the withdrawal of the law in a surprise announcement.
The Prime Minister had argued that the laws were mainly reforms for small and marginal farmers in the country. "Everything I did was for the farmers, I do for the country," he said.
Thousands of farmers from Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan have been camping outside Delhi since November 2020 demanding the repeal of the 'draconian laws'.
The BJP had no choice but to withdraw the law as it prepares for the big elections, including the 2024 national elections. The BJP is facing huge public outcry in the northern states.
