KOCHI: Salim Kumar, the National Award-winning Indian actor celebrated for his unparalleled versatility in both comedic and poignant roles, passed away on Saturday night at 10:45 PM. He was 56.
The veteran actor suffered a fatal cardiac arrest at Amrita Hospital in Kochi, where he was being treated under ventilator support in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for pneumonia. He had also been battling severe, long-term liver and kidney ailments. His sudden demise has sent shockwaves through the Indian film fraternity and left millions of fans grieving.
Salim Kumar began his artistic journey as a mimicry artist, performing with renowned troupes such as Cochin Kalabhavan and Sagar. He made his feature film debut in 1996 with Ishtamanu Nooruvattam. However, his breakthrough came with the blockbuster comedy Thenkasipattanam in 2000, which catapulted him into stardom.
Over a career spanning nearly three decades, he acted in over 300 films. He became a cultural icon in Kerala, with his legendary characters—such as Manavalan, Dance Master Vikram, and Pyari—and his iconic dialogues cementing his status as the "King of Malayalam Memes" in contemporary digital culture.

Best Second Actor (Kerala State Film Award): For his deeply moving performance in Lal Jose's Achanurangatha Veedu.
Best Actor (National & State Film Awards, 2010): For his masterful portrayal of an aging Haj aspirant in Adaminte Makan Abu.
As a filmmaker, he directed notable projects including Compartment, Daivame Kaithozham K. Kumarakanam, and Karutha Joothan. His work on Karutha Joothan earned him the Kerala State Film Award for Best Story in 2016.
Born on October 9, 1969, in North Paravur, Salim Kumar was also known for his sharp, uncompromising stances on contemporary social and political issues. His final major public appearance was at a reception ceremony in Paravur honoring V. D. Satheesan following his appointment as Chief Minister.
Salim Kumar is survived by his wife, Sunitha, and their two sons, Chandu and Aromal.
The mortal remains will be kept for public homage at the Paravur Town Hall on Sunday starting at 9:00 AM, before being moved to his residence. The funeral services are scheduled to take place later this evening.
