Dubai: Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has rejected US President Donald Trump's claims that negotiations are underway with the United States. He described it as "fake news" intended to artificially influence the economic and oil markets and to divert attention from the strategic setbacks faced by the US and Israel.
"No negotiations have been held with America. Fake news is being used to influence the economic and oil markets and to escape the swamp in which the US and Israel are trapped," Ghalibaf stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
He added that the Iranian people are demanding a "complete and remorse-inducing punishment" for the aggressors, and that all Iranian officials will remain united behind their Supreme Leader and the people until that goal is achieved.
These reactions followed Donald Trump's announcement on Monday that military operations targeting Iranian energy centers were being temporarily suspended. Trump described the talks as "effective." However, Iran maintains that the US retreated following a "strong warning" from Tehran.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that he had directed the US Department of Defense to postpone all military strikes against Iran's power plants and energy infrastructure for five days. He clarified that further decisions would depend on the progress of the negotiations.
"I am pleased to announce that very good and effective conversations have taken place between the United States and Iran over the past two days regarding a total cessation of hostilities in the Middle East," Trump added, describing the talks as detailed and constructive.
Trump’s Statements Aimed at the Market, says Iranian Professor
Seyyed Mohammad Marandi, a professor at the University of Tehran, publicly questioned Trump's claims. "Every week when the market opens, Trump makes such statements to lower oil prices. Even his five-day deadline coincides with the closing times of the energy markets," he wrote.
He further alleged that no real negotiations are taking place and that Trump lacks the capacity to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Marandi stated that Iran's strong threats have forced Trump to back down once again.
