Chennai: Sangeetha Sornalingam, the wife of actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay, has filed a divorce petition to end their 27-year marriage.
The Chengalpattu Principal District Court has issued a notice to Vijay to appear in person on April 20. Following the initial hearing held on Thursday, the court adjourned the case to April 20 and directed the actor to be present. The petition was officially submitted to the Chengalpattu court on December 3, 2025.
Married in August 1999, the couple has two children, Jason Sanjay and Divya Shasha. The legal proceedings have been initiated under the provisions of the Special Marriage Act, 1954, which allows a spouse to seek divorce on grounds such as adultery and cruelty.
Key Allegations in the Petition:
Extramarital Affair: Sangeetha (48) alleges that Vijay has an extramarital relationship with an actress. She stated in the petition that she became aware of this in 2021. Although Vijay had reportedly assured her that he would end the relationship, Sangeetha claims it continued without any remorse.
Humiliation: She stated that Vijay excluded her from his social and professional life while traveling abroad and attending public events with the said actress. The petition notes that photos shared by the actress on social media caused significant humiliation to her and their children.
Financial Restrictions: Sangeetha alleged that Vijay withdrew facilities she previously enjoyed and imposed financial restrictions on her.
Mental Torture: She expressed that her husband’s conduct caused severe mental agony. She clarified that their marriage now exists only on paper and is beyond reconciliation.
The petition for divorce was filed under Section 27(1)(a) and 27(1)(d) of the Special Marriage Act. The matter is currently under the consideration of the District Court.
Background and Demands
Sangeetha, the daughter of a Tamil industrialist, was once a devoted fan of Vijay. According to the petition, their marriage was registered in London on July 10, 1998, and later solemnized according to Hindu rituals in Chennai on August 25, 1999. Sangeetha stated that the marriage was initially happy, and she focused on raising their children while supporting Vijay's career.
Sangeetha’s Prayers to the Court:
Grant a decree of divorce.
Provide permanent alimony.
Allow her to reside in their current residence or a similar alternative.
Conduct the court proceedings in-camera (privately) to protect their privacy.
