MOSCOW: President Vladimir Putin of Russia and President Donald Trump of the United States, in a phone call, called for continuing direct talks between Moscow and Kiev and discussed the idea of increasing their level, Kremlin Aide Yury Ushakov said in a briefing.
"Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump spoke in favor of continuing direct talks between the delegations of Russia and Ukraine. In this regard, the parties discussed the idea of considering the possibility of increasing the level of both countries' delegations involved in the direct talks," he noted.
The delegations of Russia and Ukraine have held three rounds of direct talks since May 2025. Moscow’s delegation to the talks is led by Presidential Aide Vladimir Medinsky. The Kremlin pointed out earlier that his rank was in fact higher than that of a minister.
Ukraine’s delegation is headed by Rustem Umerov, who used to serve as the country’s defense minister and was appointed as secretary of the National Security and Defense Council on July 18.
