YEREVAN: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will pay a working visit to Armenia to discuss, among other things, bilateral relations, cooperation within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and regional issues.
Lavrov is scheduled to meet with the country’s Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and President Vahagn Khachaturyan.
The Russian minister’s previous visit to Armenia took place in June 2022.
Lavrov’s meetings with the Armenian leadership will build upon the agreements achieved at the highest level on October 8, 2024, as well as the outcomes of Ararat Mirzoyan’s visit to Moscow on January 21.
The agenda includes deliberations on a broad spectrum of bilateral cooperation issues, collaboration within Eurasian integration frameworks, and the coordination of positions in international fora, particularly at the United Nations. The foreign ministers will exchange detailed views on matters of regional security, including prospects for Armenian-Azerbaijani and Armenian-Turkish normalization processes.
The signing of the Plan for Inter-Ministerial Consultations for 2025-2026 is also expected.
Peace and regional security
The ministers will exchange opinions on regional security, including prospects of normalizing the Armenian-Azerbaijani and Armenian-Turkish relations.
During Mirzoyan’s visit in January, Lavrov reaffirmed Russia’s readiness to help Yerevan and Baku in all issues related to normalization of bilateral relations, if they are interested. This includes assistance in drafting the peace treaty, demarcation and delimitation of borders, as well as in unblocking transportation routes and in humanitarian issues.
Cooperation within the EAEU holds a special place. The Russian Foreign Minister earlier said that the EAEU has become a basis for social and economic development of both Russia and Armenia, and a factor in their sustainable economic growth "amid a difficult, turbulent international situation."
The sides are also expected to address the situation in the Caucasus and the Middle East. The Russian side may also inform Armenian colleagues about its latest Ukraine-themed talks, including with the United States.
Russia and Armenia marked the 33rd anniversary of establishing diplomatic ties in April.
