CHISINAU: The Moldovan Foreign Ministry has handed a note to Russian Ambassador Oleg Ozerov indicating that three employees of the Russian Embassy have been deemed personae non gratae.
"The Foreign Ministry has sent the Russian diplomat a note declaring three employees of the Russian Embassy as personae non gratae," the Moldovan foreign policy agency said in a statement. It insisted that the decision by the country’s authorities was based on "clear evidence of activities in the Republic of Moldova incompatible with diplomatic status." The Russian side will respond to Chisinau’s decision to declare the Russian Embassy employees personae non gratae, the Russian Foreign Ministry told TASS.
On his part, the Russian envoy branded the accusations by the Moldovan side as "untenable and unsubstantiated." He urged Chisinau to "refrain from provocative conjectures and return to pragmatic dialogue on the entire set of issues of bilateral relations, which corresponds to the fundamental interests of the people of Moldova and Russia."
Earlier, Alexandru Musteata, director of Moldova's Security and Intelligence Service, said at a briefing that the Russian Embassy had allegedly helped Alexander Nesterovsky, a legislator from the Victory political bloc, to escape justice. According to him, a day before Nesterovsky’s verdict was handed down, the opposition activist was allowed to enter the premises of the diplomatic mission and the following day, he was taken to Transnistria in a vehicle with diplomatic plates.
