MOSCOW: Plans by several European countries to deploy so-called "reassurance forces" to Ukraine and take Odessa and Lvov under control are reminiscent of the allied intervention in the Russian Civil War, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a briefing.
"There is an impression that the Europeans have already set their eyes on these cities and are harboring their own plans for them," she noted. "Actually, the goals of such forces also include the containment of Russia’s potential aggression. This is reminiscent of the military intervention by the Entente during the 1917-1922 Civil War in our country. But it’s ok, we know the history well," the diplomat added.

The spokeswoman reiterated that the French-UK initiative on deploying some "reassurance forces" to Ukraine was discussed in Paris on March 27 at yet another European summit of a so-called "coalition of the willing" formed a month ago in order to assemble some "peacekeeping" contingent to be deployed in Ukraine.
"There is an impression that this is being done in order to completely mislead their own citizens, the EU and UK citizens, who already do not understand ‘what is what,’ who is playing which games, who is supporting whom, how they are called and which functions they fulfill," Zakharova stated. "These forces will not be stationed at the line of combat engagement, nor replace the Ukrainian armed forces. Their purpose is protecting strategic points in coordination with the Ukrainians, for example, Odessa and Lvov, which is being openly mentioned both in Paris and London," she concluded.
