Thiruvananthapuram: ADGP Manoj Abraham, who is in charge of law and order in Keraka, has directed the IGs of the South and North regions to take strict action against fake online news portals and YouTube channels aimed at blackmailing and extorting money.
The action is based on a complaint filed by Com India (Confederation of Online Media India), the apex body of major independent online news portals in Kerala including localglob.com. A complaint was submitted to the Chief Minister, DGP and ADGP in this regard.
Several incidents have been reported where businessesmen, industrialists, hospitals, religious and political leaders are being threatened and demanded money under the guise of online websites and YouTube channels.
According to Com India President Saj Kurien and Secretary KK Sreejith, anti-social forces including quotation gangs are also working behind such fake online media which are run only for fraud.
It is common for some people to approach organizations in the name of media without even having a website. They are giving headlines on their Facebook page only. Some of these media have come together and formed some associations and collective fundraising is going on in the name of it.
Com India also points out that there have been many complaints about blackmailing at various police stations.
After receiving the complaint, the ADGP ordered an investigation. The police will also look into the previous complaints of similar incidents at various police stations.
Such groups are also spreading news that harm religious harmony. There have also been complaints that people's representatives have been threatened.
