MOSCOW: Russia believes that the attack on its embassy in Lithuania is a direct result of Vilnius’ Russophobic policy, and the country demands an objective investigation into the accident leading to those responsible being brought to justice, Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.
The diplomat pointed to the April 7 and 8 attacks on the Russian embassy in Lithuania.
"We see the incident as being the result of the targeted Russophobic policy of official Vilnius and the unprecedented intensity of anti-Russian rhetoric," she pointed out. "We demand that Lithuanian law enforcement agencies conduct an objective investigation into this crime and adequately ensure the security of the Russian diplomatic mission in accordance with the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations." "All those involved in this attack must be found and punished, and the damage to the Russian Embassy building must be compensated," the spokeswoman emphasized.
She recalled that Lithuanian journalists, egged on by the authorities, have been openly calling for the siege of the Russian diplomatic mission since 2022, constantly holding all kinds of "absolutely aggressive" rallies and demonstrations near the embassy.
"According to Lithuanian media, the police have already detained the man who allegedly threw incendiary compounds at our embassy in Lithuania for two nights in a row. It's pure luck that no one was injured, but the building was damaged," the diplomat added.
