UNITED NATIONS: Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi has slammed the strike on the containment dome of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant’s (ZNPP) Unit 6 as a dangerous precedent, although no serious damage was done.

"The ISAMZ (IAEA Support and Assistance Mission to Zaporozhye - TASS) team was able to inspect the location of one direct strike at the apex of the containment dome of the Unit 6 reactor building. Whilst the damage to the structure is superficial, the attack sets a very dangerous precedent of the successful targeting of the reactor containment," he said at a meeting of the United Nations Security Council.

Attacks on the ZNPP must be halted as they jeopardize the safety of the facility, Grossi added.

"These reckless attacks must cease immediately. Though fortunately they have not lead to a radiological incident this time, they significantly increase the risk at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant where nuclear safety is already compromised," he said.

Grossi marked as well that IAEA staff had not seen any heavy weapons at the ZNPP.

The IAEA chief recalled that on April 7 the organization’s experts had reported a direct strike on the ZNPP, for the first time since November 2020.

On April 5-9, the Ukrainian military carried out several strikes on the ZNPP premises. In the area of ZNPP's cargo port and nitrogen-oxygen station No. 2, the attacks damaged a truck that had delivered food to a canteen. Three people were injured. One of the drones hit the roof of Unit 6. A suicide drone was shot down over the NPP. Its fragments fell on the roof of Unit 6. ZNPP spokeswoman Yevgeniya Yashina said on April 14 that the situation in the area of ZNPP and the city of Energodar remained tense, with Ukrainian drones often appearing in the sky.
