Malappuram (Kerala): The death toll has reached 18 after a boat carrying a group of tourists sank at Tanur in Malappuram. The dead included four children and a woman. The death toll is likely to rise. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will visit the accident site tomorrow morning.
The boat sank with around 40 people. Some swam ashore. 20 people were rescued. Some of those who reached the shore are in critical condition. As it is night, the rescue mission is very difficult. Locals, fire rescue and disaster response forces are all on the scene for the rescue mission.

The rescued people have been admitted in JS Mission, Tirurangadi Taluk Hospital, Parappanangadi Nahas, Kottakal and various hospitals in Tanur.
A two-storied houseboat belonging to a person named Nasser was capsized. The dead have not been identified. Ministers reached Tanur to coordinate the rescue operation.
The disaster occurred in a mangrove and swampy area. A few people were taken out by cutting the boat. The government order was to stop the boat service at 6 pm. The accident happened when the service continued after that.
Huge crowd and vehicles hamper the rescue operation. The police requested the public to cooperate by not going to the accident site. Most people reached the accident site in search of their loved ones.
