Dubai : As part of an ongoing crackdown on anti-government demonstrators in Iran, 19-year-old twin sisters Taraneh Rahimi and Romina Rahimi have received severe judicial sentences following their arrest during street protests in Isfahan. Taraneh Rahimi was handed a death sentence, while her sister Romina was sentenced to 25 to 36 years in prison.

In May, their mother was granted access to visit them at Dowlatabad Prison in Isfahan. According to her testimony, both sisters showed extensive signs of physical abuse, including severe facial swelling, lost hair from being dragged across cell floors, and fractures to their feet, elbows, and fingers.
Reports from human rights organizations and family members further allege that the sisters were subjected to prolonged solitary confinement and sexual violence. Taraneh reportedly signed a forced confession after authorities threatened sexual assault against her sister during interrogation.
The trial, conducted before the Isfahan Revolutionary Court, reportedly lacked basic due process:
Restricted Access: Family members were barred from entering the courtroom.

Lack of Evidence: Defense counsel noted that no evidence was submitted demonstrating involvement in violent acts.
Coerced Testimony: Taraneh explicitly informed the court that her confession was extracted under severe torture.
Severe Charges: The sisters were charged with "enmity against God" (Moharebeh) and "assembly and collusion against national security."
Defense attorneys are currently working to appeal Taraneh's death sentence within the designated window, though the family expressed concern that standard procedural deadlines are being disregarded in political cases.
Human rights organizations and international advocates have raised concerns over the proceedings, urging global intervention. This case comes amid broader reporting from rights groups indicating that over 500 individuals have been executed in Iran this year, including at least 29 people connected to recent protests.
