BUENOS AIRES: Footballer Lionel Messi announced on Monday that he is retiring from the Argentinian national team.
"After all this time since the final, and after thinking about it a lot, I want to tell everyone that I’m retiring from the national team," the footballer stated on his Instagram channel (banned in Russia as it’s owned by Meta Corporation, which is designated as an extremist organization in Russia).
"It was a decision that hurt and still hurts deep inside, but I understand that this is the right moment," Messi added.
Messi, 39, was the captain of the Argentinian national football team and boasts a career 125 goals in 207 matches on the international stage.
Since 2023 he has been playing for the North American Major League Soccer (MLS) club Inter Miami. In Europe, Messi played for Paris Saint-Germain of France and Barcelona of Spain, where he won the Champions League four times, the UEFA Super Cup and the World Club Championship three times each.
Messi was part of Argentina teams that won the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the 2021 Copa America and gold at the 2008 Summer Olympics. The Argentinian striker owns a record eight Ballon d’Or awards and a record six European Golden Shoes.
