WASHINGTON: US authorities are investigating at least 56 possible cases of fraud and corruption linked to financial assistance provided to Kiev, as well as the transfer of weapons supplied to Ukraine to third parties, according to a new report prepared by the inspectors general of the Pentagon, the US State Department, and the now effectively dismantled US Agency for International Development (USAID). The report was submitted to the US Congress for review.
According to the document, as of March 31, the inspectors general and their partners reported 56 open and 13 closed investigations. Four cases have been referred to the US Department of Justice, which serves as the country’s top prosecutorial authority, while one additional case has been referred to another investigative body.
The document also stated that US authorities, in cooperation with Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU), detained a Ukrainian corruption suspect hiding in the United States who is accused in Ukraine of abuse of office and document forgery. His name was not disclosed in the report.
In addition, the report noted that US immigration authorities detained three Ukrainian citizens facing criminal charges in their home country. Their identities were not disclosed.
