Dubai: Following the announcement of a tentative Trump-Tehran ceasefire, a series of devastating Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon has once again pushed West Asia to the brink of total war. In retaliation for the strikes, Iran has re-established a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, significantly escalating the threat of a broader regional conflict.
The ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran had barely taken effect when Israel launched "Operation Eternal Darkness." In a single day of intense bombardment, at least 254 people were killed and nearly 900 wounded across Lebanon. The operation targeted over 100 locations. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned the assault as a "barbaric massacre" and declared a period of national mourning.
Economic and Diplomatic Fallout
Tehran’s response has sent shockwaves through global markets. The Strait of Hormuz—a critical artery for the world’s oil supply—was closed by Iranian forces just days after being reopened under the terms of the truce. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned that Tehran would refuse to cooperate with further peace negotiations unless the military campaign in Lebanon is halted.
While Hezbollah initially showed restraint to give the ceasefire a chance, the group has since responded to the Israeli offensive by firing volleys of rockets into northern Israel. This escalation occurs amid a sharp diplomatic divide between Washington and Tehran regarding the scope of the current agreement.
A Fractured Agreement
The core of the crisis lies in conflicting interpretations of the ceasefire's terms:
The U.S. Position: The Trump administration has clarified that Lebanon is excluded from the current truce. Vice President J.D. Vance stated that any Iranian withdrawal from the deal over the Lebanon issue would be "unacceptable."
The Iranian Position: Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi maintains that a cessation of hostilities in Lebanon is a fundamental condition of the 10-point agreement.
The Mediator’s Crisis: Pakistan, acting as the primary mediator, initially indicated that Lebanon was included in the pact. This ambiguity has sparked a major diplomatic crisis.
While Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated the ceasefire applied "everywhere, including Lebanon," Vice President Vance dismissed this as a "major misunderstanding," asserting that the U.S. would not interfere with Israeli operations. President Donald Trump added that Lebanon was excluded "because of Hezbollah," though he suggested its inclusion could be revisited later.
"Operation Eternal Darkness"
The scale of the Israeli operation has drawn international condemnation. Within a 10-minute window, approximately 50 fighter jets struck over 100 locations. Critically, many strikes in central Beirut were conducted without the traditional evacuation warnings, contributing to the high civilian death toll.
Israeli officials claim the operation successfully destroyed Hezbollah intelligence hubs, missile launch sites, and command centers. Among the casualties was Imam Sadiq al-Nabulsi, a figure reportedly linked to Hezbollah leadership.
Humanitarian Crisis
The strikes have devastated central Beirut, an area currently housing thousands of displaced refugees in temporary camps. Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has issued an urgent appeal to the international community to intervene and stop what he termed "unprecedented cruelty."
The upcoming high-level talks in Islamabad this Friday, April 10, are now viewed as the final opportunity to salvage the peace process. The future of the region depends entirely on whether Iran chooses to remain at the table or withdraws from the ceasefire entirely.
