WASHINGTON: The US administration eyes an option of providing military protection to oil and gas tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz, Politico news outlet said, citing sources.

The US government is also discussing an option where it will act as an insurer to provide for free passage of tankers through the strait. Such decision is explained by attempts to restrain the rise in energy prices amid the crisis in the Middle East.
