Dubai: Following the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a joint US-Israeli strike, US President Donald Trump stated that he knows "exactly who" is capable of leading the country.
When asked by CBS News who he believes is making decisions in Iran following Khamenei's death, Trump responded, "I know exactly who, but I can't tell you right now." When asked if there was someone specifically he would like to see lead Iran, he added, "Yes, I think so. There are some good candidates."
Regarding the question of a successor, he remarked, "I don't know, but at some point, they’ll be calling me to ask who I’d like." Trump later clarified, "I’m only being a little sarcastic when I say that." Khamenei, who had ruled Iran since 1989, had never publicly designated a successor.
Trump described Ali Khamenei as "one of the most evil people in history." Posting on Truth Social, he stated, "This is not only justice for the people of Iran, but for the Great Americans and those from many countries throughout the world who have been killed or mutilated by Khamenei and his gang."
He remarked that this is the "single greatest chance" for the Iranian people to take back their country. He also warned that heavy, pinpoint bombing would continue until peace is achieved in the Middle East and the world. Trump explained that the objective of the military campaign, named 'Operation Epic Fury', is to eliminate imminent threats from the Iranian regime.
Since Khamenei did not publicly name a successor, Iran's 'Assembly of Experts' is responsible for electing a new leader. While the name of Khamenei's son, Mojtaba Khamenei, has surfaced in discussions, the current situation suggests a high potential for internal power struggles.
Iran launched missile strikes not only against Israel but also against seven Gulf states hosting US bases, increasing the risk of the conflict spreading to other nations.
The death of Khamenei is a major blow to groups like Hezbollah (Lebanon) and Hamas (Gaza), which operate with Iranian support.
Trump has expressed a desire for regime change, stating he wants the Iranian people to reclaim their government. He believes that negotiations with Iran will now be much easier; however, his assertion that attacks will continue in the coming days has heightened regional concerns.
