Karachi: Twelve protesters were shot dead by US Marines after attempting to storm the United States Consulate in Karachi, Pakistan. The unrest followed the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in a joint US-Israeli strike. Reports indicate that more than 30 others have been injured.
The march, organized by Shia groups to protest Khamenei’s assassination, turned violent. Following the clashes, a large contingent of police and Pakistani security forces was deployed to the area.
Police have completely sealed off major routes to the diplomatic enclave in Karachi, including Mai Kolachi and MT Khan Road.
Authorities used tear gas to disperse the crowds as they attempted to breach security perimeters. Security has been tightened at all US and Israeli diplomatic missions across Pakistan.
While a large protest took place outside the US Consulate in Lahore, no violence was reported there. However, in Gilgit-Baltistan, protesters set fire to a United Nations office.
The provocation stems from the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei during a joint air strike conducted by the United States and Israel. Khamenei holds significant influence among Shia communities in Pakistan; his death has triggered widespread anger across the Islamic world, particularly among Pakistani Shia groups.
The firing reportedly occurred when protesters tried to force their way into the high-security zone of the US Consulate in Karachi.
This incident is likely to severely strain diplomatic relations between Pakistan and the United States. Authorities remain on high alert as the domestic security situation in Pakistan is expected to worsen in the coming days.
