FLORIDA: Security personnel shot and killed an armed young man who trespassed into the high-security zone of Mar-a-Lago, U.S. President Donald Trump’s residence in Palm Beach, Florida.
The incident occurred at approximately 1:30 AM on Sunday. Reports identify the individual as Austin Tucker Martin (21), from North Carolina. His family had filed a missing person report for him a few days prior.
The intruder was carrying a shotgun and a container filled with fuel. He gained entry through the estate’s north gate by driving his car in just as another vehicle was exiting.
When security officers ordered him to drop his weapon, he reportedly aimed the shotgun at them. In response, Secret Service agents and a Palm Beach deputy opened fire. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Neither President Donald Trump nor First Lady Melania Trump were at Mar-a-Lago during the shooting; they were at the White House at the time.
A joint investigation has been launched by the FBI, Secret Service, and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities are looking into the motive and whether the attacker had any history of mental health issues.
Investigators believe he acquired the gun during his journey from North Carolina to Florida. A gun box was recovered from his silver Volkswagen. While he reportedly put down the petrol can when confronted, he refused to lower the shotgun.
This incident has reignited debates regarding lapses in presidential security. Notably, President Trump has faced previous assassination attempts, including an incident in Pennsylvania in July 2024 and another at a Florida golf course in September.
The FBI has collected footage from officers' body cameras and requested security camera recordings from neighbors surrounding Mar-a-Lago. Security around the estate has been significantly tightened, especially as reports suggest the President was scheduled to arrive in Palm Beach the following day.
