THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The scientific investigation report by Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) confirming the theft of gold from Sabarimala Temple has been handed over to the Special Investigation Team (SIT). The report was subsequently submitted to the Kollam Vigilance Court. Sabarimala is a major Hindu pilgrimage site in Kerala, India, dedicated to Lord Ayyappa, situated on a hilltop in dense forests, known for its strict pilgrimage rituals.
Key Findings of the Scientific Probe
Experts analyzed 15 samples collected from various parts of the sanctum sanctorum (Sreekovil), including the Dwarapalaka idols (door guards) and doorframes.
The VSSC experts used advanced X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) technology to test the age, purity, and quantity of the gold. The findings confirmed a massive reduction in the actual amount of gold compared to records from 1998.
The investigation reveals that the original gold plates were replaced with copper plates coated in gold. The probe confirmed that many parts are now merely gold-plated copper replicas.
The Modus Operandi
The SIT suspects a sophisticated scam where the original gold plates were removed, and new molds were created to produce copper replicas. These replicas were then gold-plated and reinstalled.
In 1998, businessman Vijay Mallya had donated 30.3 kg of gold and 1900 kg of copper for the gold plating. The current report indicates that much of this gold is missing. The SIT suspects that gold plates sent to 'Smart Creations' in Chennai for "inspection" in 2019 were melted into bars and replaced with fakes.
Investigators are looking into whether an international smuggling technique, similar to that used by notorious idol smuggler Subhash Kapoor, was employed here.
High-Profile Arrests and Suspects
12 People Arrested: So far, 12 individuals have been arrested in connection with the case.
KP Sankaradas: The 11th accused and former Devaswom Board member is currently in judicial custody. Following a jail doctor's report, he was moved from a private hospital to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Cardiology department.
Tantri Kandararu Rajeevaru: The Sabarimala head priest (Tantri) is also in judicial custody. A raid at his residence uncovered a 'Vaji Vahanam' (horse idol) belonging to the old temple mast, the possession of which is deemed illegal.
Other Top Officials: Former Devaswom Board Presidents A. Padmakumar and N. Vasu are also in judicial custody.
Further Questioning: Notices are likely to be issued to former board members K. Raghavan and Ajay Tharayil regarding irregularities in the 2017 mast replacement.
CBI and ED Involvement
CBI Probe: The CBI has informed the High Court of its willingness to take over the case, citing potential international links and smuggling of gold abroad. The High Court will take a final call on January 19 after reviewing the SIT's progress report.
ED Investigation: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has registered a case under the PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act) to track the money trail from the sale of the stolen gold. The Kollam Vigilance Court has granted the ED permission to examine all case-related documents.
