MOSCOW: Russia supports the idea of reforming the United Nations Security Council and adjusting it to new realities, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in response to a TASS reporter’s question.
"Indeed, we have consistently supported the idea of reforming the UN Security Council and adjusting the Security Council to the reality of fast-changing times," Peskov said when asked if he views remarks from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres about the need to reform the UNSC and limit the veto power of members as an attempt to revise the results of WWII and the role of the USSR in it.
Earlier, Guterres stated that reform at the UNSC was necessary as its current composition reflects the realities of 1945 and not those of today’s world, which, he argued, causes legitimacy and efficiency issues. Also, the UN chief said he was "sympathetic" to proposals, namely from France and Great Britain, to limit the veto right, especially in situations of massive violations of human rights.
In late August, Russian President Vladimir Putin told Xinhua in an interview that Moscow and Beijing support reform at the UN. In particular, they advocate for a broader representation of Asian, African and Latin American countries at the UNSC.
