MOSCOW: Ukraine plotted a terrorist attack in Moscow, but it was prevented, Russian Investigative Committee Spokeswoman Svetlana Petrenko said.
"A criminal case has been opened against a suspect on charges of conspiring to commit a terrorist attack. He has been indicted, and the motion of the investigation to take him into custody pending trial has been granted," she said.
According to Petrenko, the Moscow office of the Investigative Committee is investigating a criminal case against a local resident accused of public justification of terrorism. The man's cell phone was seized during a search at his home. When inspecting the phone, investigators found correspondence with a handler from a Ukrainian special service, which directed the man to get a cache in a woodland park in western Moscow.
"Acting jointly with law enforcement operatives, investigators from the Moscow office of the Investigative Committee immediately conducted an inspection of said spot in the woodland park, finding and seizing an IED. At the direction of the handler, the suspect plotted to detonate it in a crowded public area," Petrenko said.
