MOSCOW: French President Emmanuel Macron's talk about sending NATO "peacekeepers" to Ukraine without regard for Russia's position not only shows a complete disconnect from reality but increases the risk of a direct clash between the Russian and NATO forces, said Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.
She was responding to Macron’s statement from March 15, when he said that Ukraine is a desovereign state, and if it decides to invite allied forces to its territory, Russia has no right to object to this.
"He interpreted the warning of the Russian leadership about the unacceptability of the appearance of Western contingents in Ukraine as evidence of Moscow's alleged insincerity in achieving peace and even went so far as to call Russia an 'existential strategic threat,'" Zakharova said.
"One gets the impression that in his unfulfilled delusional desire of either winning or inflicting some kind of strategic defeat on us by the hands of the Ukrainians, the French leader has long lost touch with reality and simply does not understand not only the aspects and details of the situation, but in general what is happening in the world," the diplomat stated.
"We have repeatedly said that introduction of so-called peacekeepers into Ukraine in practice would mean a foreign military intervention that further escalates the conflict. This may significantly increase the risk of a direct clash between the North Atlantic Alliance and the Russian Federation."
On the subject of Macron's claim that Russia doesn't have the right to take a position on the permissibility of foreign troops taking an active part in the conflict in Ukraine, Zakharova said, "As a sovereign country and as a country that has repeatedly suffered from Western barbarism, we have the right and will decide for ourselves how to ensure our own security, especially if the issue of collective security was not only unresolved on the European continent, but it was at the expense of those like Macron and his predecessors and other existing unfriendly regimes that it was sent to a nosedive."
