LONDON: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called for urgently rearming Europe.
"We urgently have to rearm Europe and for that I will present a comprehensive plan of how to rearm Europe" at a European Council meeting on March 6, she told journalists after a meeting of European leaders in London.
"We have to surge our defense," she said, adding that Europe must "step up massive defense expenditure." She also promised to revise budgetary norms and financial rule in the European Union that are controlled by the European Commission to give the EU countries more possibilities for government investments into weapons production.
