MOSCOW: European countries will not succeed in an arms race against Russia because Moscow has no intention of participating, choosing instead to focus on securing its own interests, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented on statements from the EU regarding its military plans.

"They won’t win against us! Because we won’t engage with them," Peskov said. "We will focus on our own matters and secure our own interests," he added.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, ahead of the EU summit, stated that Europe should engage in an arms race with Russia, claiming that the community sees Moscow's military superiority as a direct challenge. His remarks came in the wake of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's announcement of the EU's remilitarization plan, which includes an €800 billion rearmament initiative. This funding will, among other things, be allocated for the purchase of weapons for Ukraine.

French President Emmanuel Macron also addressed the issue of militarization in a speech to the French public, labeling a strong Russia as a threat to both France and the entire continent. He justified the increase in military spending and the expansion of French nuclear weapons across the EU as a necessary measure to address this alleged threat.
