New Delhi: 12841 Coromandel Superfast train from Kolkata's Howrah station to Chennai derailed at Balasore in Odisha and hit another train and a stationary goods train. Several people were reported dead and injured. More than 200 people are trapped under the overturned bogies. Locals started the rescue operation.
Four bogies are reported to have overturned. The accident took place near Bahanaga railway station in Balasore district. The office of the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) said that teams have been dispatched to the accident site for search and rescue operations.
Odisha Fire Services chief Sudhanshu Sarangi is supervising the rescue operations, according to new reports. Medical colleges and hospitals in Balasore and surrounding areas have been instructed to be ready.
Three units of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), four units of the State Disaster Response Force and 60 ambulances have been dispatched. Odisha channel Kanak News has released the initial footage of the accident. Quoting initial reports, a railway official said that more than 200 passengers were trapped in the overturned coaches of the superfast train.
Another unconfirmed report said that the Coromandel train traveling on the main line derailed and hit a goods train on the loop line and then the Yeswantpur-Howrah Express.
