MOSCOW: Russia has confirmed 36,339 new COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, the highest daily increase ever recorded in the country, taking the nationwide tally to 8,131,164, the official monitoring and response center said Thursday.
The nationwide death toll grew by a record daily increase of 1,036 to 227,389, and the number of recoveries increased by 25,895 to 7,091,607.
Meanwhile, Moscow, Russia's worst-hit region, reported 7,897 new cases, taking its total to 1,745,681.
Isolated cases of a Delta sub-variant, namely the AY 4.2, were detected in Russia, according to Russia's consumer rights and human well-being watchdog Rospotrebnadzor.
The new AY 4.2 strain, a mutation of the Delta variant first detected in Britain, may be more virulent than the current Delta strain that is dominant in Russia, said Kamil Khafizov, who heads the state consumer protection watchdog Rospotrebnadzor's scientific group for new methods to diagnose diseases.
Similarly to the original Delta strain, this new mutation could lead to another surge in cases, said Khafizov.
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday announced a nationwide non-working period from Oct. 30 through to Nov. 7 in an attempt to curb a further surge in virus cases.
Regional authorities were advised to implement the non-working period earlier if necessary and extend it if cases continue to grow.
