Kumali: The fifth spillway shutter of the Mullaperiyar Dam was raised this evening due to increased water level.
3 and 4 shutters were raised in the morning. It is currently discharging 825 cubic feet of water per second, said Revenue Minister K Rajan. The minister is camping in the area to get a first-hand understanding of the situation.
The water from Mullaperiyar reservoir reaches Idukki Dam in the downstream. The red alert was declared in Idukki in the morning but was withdrawn in the evening. Locals are waiting for the next step in Idukki as the third shutter of Mullaperiyar was raised at night.
By evening, the water level in Idukki Dam had dropped to 2398.3 feet. Once the water level rule curve is exceeded, a red alert will be declared again, said Water Resources Minister Roshi Augustine.
