New Delhi: The Confederation of Online Media, India (ComIndia), a consortium of authoritative online media in Kerala, has been approved by the Central Government. Com India is a community of 24 leading online news portals from Kerala, including www.localglob.com and www.vyganews.com.
As part of the new IT Act introduced by the Central Government, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has approved the Digital Publishers' Content Grievances Council (IDPCGC) of India, which is constituted under ComIndia.
ComIndia is the first confederation in Kerala and the third in the country to be approved by the Central Government. With the approval of ComIndia, the rules of the Press Council of India will also apply to the said online news portals.
Former Vice Chancellor of Calicut University Dr. KKN Kurup is the President of the ComIndia Grievance Council. Former director of the Institute of Children's Literature and eminent writer, Dr. George Onakkoor, James Joseph, former Director of Higher Secondary and Comptroller of the University of Kerala; Senior journalist R Gopikrishnan, ComIndia President Vincent Nellikunnel, Secretary Abdul Mujeeb and Treasurer KK Sreejith are the members of the council.
This achievement of Com India, the authoritative online media management conglomerate in Kerala, comes at a time when the approval of the committee comprising online of mainstream newspapers and channels in Kerala is still pending.
ComIndia was able to complete all the criteria prescribed by the Central Government for approval as part of the new Act in a timely manner and submit it to the Government has helped in getting the approval expeditiously.
So far, the Ministry has approved the Web Journalist Standards Authority and the Professional News Broadcasting Standards Authority in addition to ComIndia.
The approval comes after a year-long process and detailed scrutiny initiated by the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The Central Government has subjected to detailed scrutiny every media institution and organization to which they belong.
With the approval of Com India, all the 24 online media outlets that are members of confederation have in principle been approved by the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
As part of the new IT policy and the Press and Periodicals Act, it was stipulated that all online media should set up self-regulatory systems and grievance redressal cells.
With the government's approval of ComIndia, the content in these digital media will be scrutinized by this expert committee.
All existing and newly started online media outlets are now required to be members of a self-regulatory body like ComIndia.
