Tokyo: India's Avani Lekhara won gold in the women's 10m air rifle standing at the Tokyo Paralympics on Monday. Avani set a Paralympic record of 249.6.
China's Kuiping Zhang (248.9) won silver and Ukraine's Irina Schtnik won bronze overall (227.5).
This is the first gold for India in Paralympic shooting. She was lauded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and others.
Avani Lekhara is the fourth Indian athlete to win gold at the Paralympics after swimmer Murlikant Petkar in 1972, javelin thrower Devendra Jazaria in 2004 and 2006, and high jumper Thankavelu Mariappan in 2016.
In the SH1 rifle category, some of the athletes compete in wheelchairs, while those with severe disabilities compete in wheelchairs.
