MOSCOW:  Russia’s four-time Olympic champion in biathlon, Alexander Tikhonov, has volunteered to assist the special operation in Donbass, he told TASS on Friday.

"I have just dispatched over 200 sets of bandage dressings to Donbass," Tikhonov said. "I already have over 300 such sets more."

"I am taking part in such events on an ongoing basis, giving my support, both moral and financial," he added.

Tikhonov, 76, is the winner of the 1968, 1972, 1976 and 1980 Winter Olympic Games in biathlon. He is also the 11-time winner of the Biathlon World Championships.

Russia’s special military operation

On February 21, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Moscow was recognizing the sovereignty of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) and Lugansk People’s Republic (LPR). Russia signed agreements on friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance with the republics’ leaders. Moscow recognized the Donbass republics in accordance with the constitutions of the DPR and LPR within the administrative boundaries of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions as of the beginning of 2014.

Putin then announced on February 24, 2022, that, in response to a request by the heads of the Donbass republics for assistance, he had decided to carry out a special military operation in Ukraine. DPR and LPR forces launched an operation to liberate their territories under the control of Kiev.

From September 23 to September 27, 2022, the DPR and LPR, as well as the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, held referendums where the majority of voters opted to join the Russian Federation.

On September 30, 2022, Putin and the heads of the DPR and LPR, and of the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, signed treaties on their joining Russia. Subsequently, the Russian Federal Assembly (both the lower house State Duma and the upper house Federation Council) passed legislation to formally ratify these treaties, as well as federal constitutional laws on the accession of the four regions to Russia.
