MOSCOW: Wimbledon organizers - the UK Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) - decided to authorize Russian and Belarusian athletes for competition under neutral status and if a number of preconditions are met, Wimbledon press office announced Friday.
" Our current intention is to accept entries from Russian and Belarusian players subject to them competing as ‘neutral’ athletes and complying with appropriate conditions. These will prohibit expressions of support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in various forms and prohibit entry by players receiving funding from the Russian and/or Belarusian states (including sponsorship from companies operated or controlled by the states) in relation to their participation in The Championships," the statement says. "The conditions have been carefully developed through constructive dialogue with the UK Government, the LTA and international stakeholder bodies in tennis, and are aligned with the Government’s published guidance to sporting bodies in the UK."
Last year, the organizers barred Russian and Belarusian tennis players from competition. It was the only Grand Slam tournament in 2022, where athletes from these countries were unable to compete.
In 2023, the tournament will take place between July 3 and 16.
