New Delhi: In a surprise move, the BJP leadership has appointed senior leader Bhupendra Patel as Gujarat Chief Minister. Bhupendra Patel is a close confidante of former Chief Minister Anandiben Patel.
Bhupendra Patel was elected as the leader of the legislature party, succeeding Vijay Rupani. It is learned that Bhupendra Patel was appointed as the Chief Minister on the instructions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Bhupendra was recommended by Vijay Rupani as the new Chief Minister. Bhupendra Patel is the MLA from Ghatlodia seat succeeding Anandiben Patel.
Vijay Rupani said the party under Bhupendra's leadership would win a landslide victory in the coming assembly elections. Gujarat is all set to go to the polls next year.
The names of Union Ministers from Gujarat Mansukh Mandavya and Parshotam Rupala, controversial Lakshadweep Administrator Praful Khoda Patel and State Agriculture Minister RC Faldu have been in the rounds for the Chief Minister's post till this morning.
The BJP is replacing Vijay Rupani with a new chief minister 15 months before the state assembly elections. Vijay Rupani's ouster was due to a lapse in handling the second wave of Covid and a rift within the party and the government.
Bhupendra Patel is being handed over the reins of government with a clear objective. The Pattidar community is one of the decisive forces in state politics. Bhupendra Patel is being appointed as the Chief Minister to appease them.
