THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Cyclone Burevi, which has been weakening to a tropical depression is become the most shocking example of climate change, experts said. Burevi was forecasted to wreak havoc in the Ramanathapuram and Tirunelveli districts of Tamil Nadu and southern parts of Kerala.
The first prediction was that the Burevi, which enters Kerala from Tamil Nadu, will pass through the Punalur region and reach the sea off Kollam.
Later, a correction was made by the MET department that it would join the Arabian Sea between Attingal and Paravur via Ponmudi.
However, all the predictions were misplaced, and Burevi is still hovering around the Gulf of Mannar.
One section assesses this as a flaw in the weather forecast. However, experts say that the change in the nature of the cyclone is a reflection of the drastic climate change.
Scientists pointed out that, Burevi is the best example of climate change that does not even allow for forecasting. The time has come for us to pay the price for the damage done to nature.
Until recently, climate change was more or less predictable. Things have reached a point where even India, which has the best satellite systems and so on, cannot fully predict the climate.
Burevi reminds us that we still have to pay a heavy price if we are not careful about conserving nature.
