Thiruvananthapuram: The Government of Kerala has amended the Abkari Act to sell liquor from Beverages Corporation go-downs to individuals.
The amendment is effective from March 30 with retrospective effect through an extraordinary gazette notification issued on April 24.
However, liquor cannot be sold immediately because of the restrictions issued by the high court of Kerala recently.
The amendment states that alcohol can be sold to anyone who enters the warehouse. The amendment is based on the recommendation of the state government to provide alcohol to the needy who come with a prescription from doctor.
There are two beverages warehouses in Ernakulam district and one in every other district. The state government is facing a serious financial crisis when the sale of liquor is stopped.
Moreover, the state has seen a rise in the sale of hooch and cannabis after the lock down. The social issues which are being raised are also pushing the government to start liquor sales soon.
