Kochi: Thomas Mar Athanasios, 80, Metropolitan of the Chengannur diocese of Malankara Syrian Orthodox Church, died after he fell from a moving train here on Friday morning.
He was coming back from Baroda. The accident happened at 5 in the morning. The body was moved to the Ernakulam General Hospital for mortuary. Reports said he was standing near the door to alight at the Ernakulam Junction railway station when it slammed shut, throwing him to the track near Pullepady.
KT Thomas, a native of East Thalakkal family in Puthenkavu in Chengannur was born to Thomas and Eliamma on April 3, 1938.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan condoled the death of Thomas Mar Athanasios. In a message here, the Chief Minister described him as the embodiment of simplicity and compassion, who dealt equally with all sections of society.
